Ready to go at the Hyundai World Judo Championships 1999.

I caught up with Nicolas at the World Masters in Germany. He had just won a Silver medal and although he was very busy, he still found time to speak to me.

World Judo: Who encouraged you to take up judo?.

Nicholas Gill: I watched my brother compete and I just wanted to do the same.

WJ: Do you study other world judo competitors techniques in order to beat them?

NG: I'm always watching. There always something you can learn and apply to your judo. My judo is a combination of hundreds of fighters that I saw over years.

WJ: Do you believe in holidays away from training?

NG: Of course, resting is as important as the actual training.

WJ: How does it feels to win medals at world class level?

NG: It is a very good feeling. The first one is more special. The others come more normal. But they're anything like medaling at the Olympics.

WJ: Do you get financial backing from businesses or other organisations?

NG: I get help from a computer company called Omnilogic and I'm part of a program where professional hockey players help amateur athletes (Foundation de l'athlete d'excellence). Raymond Bourque from the Boston Bruins has been helping me for the last 2 years.

WJ: Is your Association very supportive?

NG: They try to help me as much as possible. In the last couple of years they have been more supportive.

WJ: Who do you consider the greatest judoka of all time?

NG: Yamashita, from Japan.

WJ: I've seen your judo video at your site, and it looks very good. I think it would be good in every judokas video collection. Which techniques and for what level it is appropriate for?

NG: I tried to make the video interesting for all level of judo players. I demonstrated Osoto-gari, kata-guruma, ochi-gari and 4 other techniques. The are a lot of competition image to make it interesting.

WJ: Congratulations on your massive success so far and wish you every luck in your future tournaments.

NG: Thanks.
