I was present at one of the most exciting judo tournaments on the planet.
The Paris Grand Slam is one of the biggest on the judo calendar, with more than 20 medallists from the Beijing 2008 Olympics in action.
In the first year from the new Olympic Period (which ends in
London 2012), judo shows a new face. On the mat for the IJF Paris Grand Slam,
young athletes appear on the scene, experienced champions change weight
categories, big stars show up in the opening of the tournament season, new rules
and competition system are presented to the world for the first time. And the
audience (over 10.400 spetactors in Bercy on Staurday) was delighted.
Double-crowned Olympic champion (2004-08), Japanese Masato Ushishiba, who is not
very used with stepping on the French mats, appeared with full power, beating
local Benjamin Darbelet in the gold medal combat for the 66kg division and
repeating the result of the Beijing Olympic Games. Twenty-year old Russian
Natalia Kuzyutina, after taking bronze at Sofia World Cup last January, took the
lead of the -52kg category defeating also a French – in this case Audrey La
Rizza. At the under 73kg category, Cuban Yordanis Arencibia showed up as strong
as the judoka who made history for his country among the -66kg (two Olympic and
three world championship medals): he was runner-up in Paris, loosing for Korean
Chun Wang, who was third in Beijing 2008.
Concerning technical aspects, the competition was held with no repechage. Golden
Score was reduced to three minutes (instead of five), there is no more koka
among other changes approved by the IJF Refereeing Commission and valid since
January 1st 2009. Seeding and placing in the tables (draw) now take into
consideration the position in the world ranking list, another new rule being
applied from this season on.
Paris Grand Slam gives 300 world ranking points to the champion of each category
and divides US$ 150.000 among the medalists of all 14 weights.
